March 2023 Favorites!

We’re already 6 days into April, and I’ve been thinking for those 6 days of how I need to get this post done.  So here it is!  March was a great month, and I have seven favorite happenings to look back on and share.

FAVORITE #1

On the first Sunday of the month, my friend Lynn and I went to Casa Manana in Ft. Worth and saw Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.

The show was great!  It spanned her life from the age of 16, showing how she started in the business of writing music, and went up through the time she came out with her Tapestry album.  Songs that she wrote were performed by singers representing the different groups and solo artists who sang her creations.  It was like watching a variety of awesome cover bands, so to speak.  I didn’t realize she’d written songs performed by the Righteous Brothers, Neil Sedaka, the Drifters, and the Shirelles among others.  So glad Lynn invited me to join her!

Our youngest granddaughter Edie had finished first in her school’s Presidential Fitness Challenge, and on the second Saturday of March, she was set to compete in the area challenge with 3 other team members from her school.  So Big Eagle and I decided to drive to Louisiana to attend the competition.  We got there late Friday afternoon, and wouldn’t you know, that evening while I was outside watching her on the trampoline in their back yard, she landed on her foot wrong, and things went downhill from there!  After a trip to urgent care, she came home with a boot on her foot and instructions to stay off of it as much as possible.  Nothing broken, thank goodness, but a pretty bad sprain.

We all still attended the challenge the next day, and she still competed in the three events that didn’t require her to use her foot: Pull-ups, sit-and-reach, and sit-ups.  I was so proud that she didn’t just throw in the towel, but showed up for her team as much as she was able.  Here she is walking on the track with her coach and team before the awards ceremony which closed the day’s proceedings:

That evening we all went out and enjoyed dinner al fresco at the Rusty Pelican.

From there we went down to Lake Pontchartrain to see the sunset.  We were surprised at the waves that the wind had churned up!  They were breaking over the walkway.  It was fun to watch kids standing right there where they were breaking, purposely getting drenched.  Paul took this picture of Cara, Helen, and me, and he managed to get one of the breaking waves in the background:

The sunset was quite beautiful!

We left for home the next morning.  Quick trip, but a fun one, except for Edie injuring herself. 😒

On St. Patrick’s Day, I got a new ride!  I was actually perfectly happy with my 2012 Rav4, but we had had it long enough that Big Eagle thought the time was ripe to trade it in for something new.  I think we both went into it expecting to get another Rav4, but the Toyota dealer was unable to obtain a car that had some of the features I wanted.  We ended up at Hyundai, and bought a 2023 Tucson, which is comparable to a Rav4, but this one has all the bells and whistles!

I’m still learning about everything it can do.  Sometimes I wonder if I’m controlling the car, or if it’s controlling itself!  The features on these new cars are pretty impressive!

We so enjoyed the steaks we learned to cook during our class at Sur la Table last month, that we decided to try to recreate the meal on our own at home!

Big Eagle seasoning the steaks

Big Eagle searing the steaks after a wardrobe change 😜

At the class, they give out the printed recipes at the end.  Neither of us remembered any flambeeing, but now that we were going by the recipe, it did say to flambe the sauce before adding the cream.  So…why not?  It was kind of exciting!

And the sauce came together quite nicely…actually even better than in the class.

The completed meal was every bit as good as it was when we took the class.  Success!  So we’ve decided when we’re in the mood for steak, but the weather’s not great for grilling, this will be our new method.

Our garage door opener remotes had been on the blink for a while, and the situation wasn’t getting any better.  So Big Eagle finally called up A-1 Garage Doors to figure out what was needed to correct things.  We had used them 12 years ago when we had another problem with our garage door.  Now, of course, having a garage door problem is not my favorite, but this couple and their local business is!  This husband and wife team is amazing!  He is 83 and has worked in this field since the mid 60’s.  His wife is 67, and she was up on that ladder installing our new garage door opener!  They are just the nicest people and such an inspiration!

The technology in the new garage door opener is pretty amazing, too.  Now we can use our phones to open/close our garage door from anywhere in the world, as long as we have internet access!  What!?

If you’re reading this and live in the Burleson area, I would definitely recommend this business.

The same day our new garage door opener was installed, halfway around the world in Lithuania, Danny and Erin attended their baby shower!

This was a really cute game they had.  Everyone submitted a baby picture of themselves, and then everybody guessed which picture was who.  Can you  tell which one is Danny and which one is Erin?

We are all so excited for this baby!

Near the end of the month, the white irises bloomed!

Also these amaryllises are making me quite happy.  These were 4 plants given to me years ago by a neighbor down the street.  When I told her how pretty I thought they were, she said she has to thin them out all the time, and she would bring me some the next time she needed to do that.  It surprised me when she brought them that very same day or the next day.  I can’t remember which…I just remember it was a lot sooner than I expected.  How sweet of her!  Anyway, I don’t know if you can really tell from this picture, but what used to be 4 plants now appears to be at least 12!  Once they finish blooming this season, I should be able divide them and spread them out a little bit more.  Yay!

Those were some of the highlights from my March!  Now we are waiting on the text or call that tells us our grandson is either on the way or has been born!

If you have favorites from March to share, I would love for you to do so in the comment section below.  I’d also love to know what you might be looking forward to in April.  I hope you have a great rest of the week and a wonderful Easter weekend!

Good to hear from you, Karen! Yes, and found out today that when Edie went to the doctor Tuesday, he said she needs to wear her boot for at least another 3 weeks. Ugh! Glad to hear the seeds are doing well for you! Since I last posted about the garden, I’ve put in our tomato and pepper transplants. Just planted pickling cucumber seeds, spinach seeds, and lettuce seeds this week. Temp keeps going up and down. Will probably wait at least a couple of more days to put in basil seeds and green bean seeds. Hopefully I’ll get flower seeds in tomorrow.

I’m jealous of how close your grandkids live! How nice that must be. I know I loved it when Cara and her family were in our addition, but that was just temporary. We just make the best of our situation, visiting whenever we can without being too intrusive, hopefully. Thank you so much for your comment!

Congrats to Edie for finishing first in her school’s fitness challenge!
I remember Danny’s picture, but which one is Erin? A random guess would be top row, second from right?
    Nice new ride! Enjoy 🙂

  3. Gale Johnston says:

Good to hear from you! Nope, Erin is bottom row, third from left, next to Danny’s picture. She hasn’t changed a bit!

  4. So nice to catch up with you. I peeked at your newest blog post and will read it in a sec but I think baby boy has arrived!! Exciting times!!

Proud of Edie hard work and athletic aptitude. Well done. So sorry she had the bad sprain but hopefully, by now, she is boot-free and back to doing all the things.
Helen looks like a teenager. I am thinking she is 11 or 12, maybe 13, but she looks so mature. Both girls are precious.

Check you out in your new ride. Very nice looking car and driver!! I have a new car (since 10.22) and still don’t have everything figured out. May never get there. But I am happy. And you look that way, too.

The steaks look scrumptious. I never make steaks on the stove. And have such trouble finding good steaks. Makes my mouth water.

The Carole King musical must have been great fun. She is one of my faves from middle and high school days.

Off to check out your other post!!

So good to hear from you, Leslie! Helen is 13…a brand new teenager! Congratulations on YOUR new car! The technology in the new cars is amazing, isn’t it? As far as steaks, do you have an H-E-B? We often buy ours at their meat service counter. Another place we’ve had luck buying good steaks is at Costco, believe it or not. Let me know if you want the Sur la Table recipe that we used. I’d be happy to email it to you!
