Just what the title says: Random little bits of life in recent days.
The first time I saw this fella was a little over a month ago. He was on the shrubbery under the hummingbird feeder.
I had never seen a praying mantis up close and in person before!
The next time I saw him, he had moved up in the world. Right up onto the hummingbird feeder.
The next day when I went to take down the feeder to clean it and refill it with fresh nectar, he was still on it. So I coaxed him onto a long stick and put him down in the flower bed.
The next few times I went to clean the feeder, I had to do the same thing. I thought it was pretty cool to have a resident praying mantis. That was until my daughter Cara googled the topic and discovered that praying mantises WILL eat a hummingbird!
Once I learned of this, a resident praying mantis near my hummingbird feeder was no longer cool! We deposited him elsewhere on the property, but he found his way back. Last week I saw him on our patio, and moved him again. The hummingbirds will be on their way to Mexico soon, so we won’t have to worry about Mr. Praying Mantis after that until next year.
I had a new COVID-19 experience at the beginning of September. My first ever tele-health appointment. It was just a routine appointment to get my blood pressure medicine re-authorized, but our doctor wasn’t scheduling in-person appointments for that. It was definitely convenient, since I was able to do it over my phone from wherever I happened to be at the time they called, which was Cleburne State Park. But it was a little weird since I had to have taken my own blood pressure to report and supply them with my weight. (I was honest, btw. 😉) As I’ve said before, you never get to old to experience “firsts”. Ah, COVID…I’m so ready for you to be history!
While we’re on the topic of health, Big Eagle and I had our flu shots and Pneumovax shots about a week and a half ago on a Friday afternoon. I was fine the next day. But on Sunday my left shoulder where I had the Pneumovax was on fire and super tender. I was also really tired. I spent half the day in bed and then laid down again for an hour or so that evening. The shoulder I had my flu shot in was fine. On Monday, three days after having the shots, I realized how inflamed the shot area was.
It actually took over a week for the redness and tenderness to finally go away. Thank goodness that is the LAST pneumonia shot I should need in my lifetime!
So this happened sometime over night last Thursday night:
Thank God no one happened to be under that limb when it broke away from the tree. Big Eagle and I spent the better part of Saturday getting it all cleaned up.
At some point this fall, we’re going to have one heck of a bonfire!
It’s National Dog Week this week! National Dog Week began in 1928, but I just learned today that it is always the last full week of September. So in honor of National Dog Week, here is a picture of my sweet dog Annie:
I actually think one of my granddaughters took this picture, but I don’t know which one.
And here is a picture of my granddog Sunny, who is still in Nigeria:
She and Annie used to be great playmates back in the day. 🥰
I decided months ago that this magnet was not coming down from our fireplace screen until Sunny is back in the U.S. with her family. So there it still is. But I received a text from Cara this morning that Sunny should be on a flight out of Nigeria tomorrow and in Houston on Wednesday if all goes as planned! Isn’t it perfect timing? I mean with National Dog Week and all? Looking forward to taking the magnet down before the end of the week!
Five random little bits from my life. What’s happening in YOUR neck of the woods?
