This month’s Memory Lane Monday is dedicated to the men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country, for you, and for me. Today is Memorial Day. While we are still in the midst of fighting this pandemic we’ve been experiencing, Memorial Day may look very different than usual for many of us.
While many are used to celebrating this holiday with picnics and parades, social distancing may be putting a damper on those traditions. Here we are having rain all day, so our outdoor activities are curtailed by the weather.
I find it pretty amazing that I don’t personally know anyone who has died in service to our country. I do have an uncle who died while serving, but I never knew him personally. Yet I do pay tribute to him today, as well as to all others who gave their lives while protecting our rights and freedom.
Perhaps you were unaware as I was that on Memorial Day at 3:00 p.m. there is a nationwide moment of remembrance. I’ve read that during that minute, across the country trains will blow their whistles, people will pause what they’re doing for a moment of silence, cars will drive with their headlights on, and in many locations “Taps” will play. I have set the alarm on my phone for 2:59 this afternoon, so I will be ready at 3:00 to participate in the remembrance.
“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”
John 15:13
