May Favorites!

What a month May has been.  I’ve been MIA for a while, but I’m trying now to get back on track.  I’ll start with a look back at some highlights from May.  Although there were definitely lows, there were also many things, but mostly people, to be thankful for.

Favorite #1

I’ll start with a thing, though.

At the beginning of the month, my sister Susan was here to see Mom.  She had never been to a Sur la Table before, so we took her there after dinner out one night.  And there I found these gorgeous mugs at half price amongst all of their Easter merchandise.  I’m not usually excited by mugs, but I just loved the spring theme of these, and I will use them all the way through summer.

Now the next favorite is not a thing OR a person.  It’s…

DEEKS!  I’ve been hearing about this handsome fellow for a few years.  And my sister has shared pictures and videos of him.  But I’ve never been able to meet him face to face.  So that was a major highlight of my trip to Florida!  Words cannot describe how adorable this big guy is.  I wish I had gotten a good picture of him on his doggie float in the pool.  He is too much!  Love him!

Favorite #3

So we were in Florida for my mother’s funeral, and while it was great to see my brothers, sisters, their wives and husbands, nieces, and nephews…

…it was my daughter Cara who flew all the way from Nigeria who really helped me carry on through the weekend.  This picture was taken in front of my sister’s house just before Big Eagle, Cara, and I got in the car to head to the funeral.

It was such a surprise to see Phillip at the funeral!

Big Eagle and Phillip’s dad Scott have been friends since high school.  They both attended Largo High School in Florida.  Since then, Scott and his wife have moved out of state.  But their son Phillip is still in Florida.  We certainly didn’t expect to see him!  But it was so nice to have the Welch family represented.  Thanks for taking the time, Phillip!

Another favorite happening in May was the visit by our good friends Denny and Lora.  We’ve known them since our kids were little bitty, so a LONG time!  They came through on their way from New Mexico back to their home in Texas, and it was so good to visit with them.

Denny and Lora are the kind of friends that you can go months, even years without seeing, and when you get together it’s just like old times.  Here we are in old town Burleson waiting to be called into Frescoe’s for dinner.

Favorite #6

Years ago we developed a second family at Northwood Christian Church in Beaumont, Tx.  It was so heartwarming at Mom’s funeral to see a beautiful plant on display that they had sent.  But then when Lora and Denny came to visit, they brought with them another special gift from our long-time friends from Northwood.

In addition to the plant that was at the funeral, they gave Big Eagle and I this beautiful wind chime!  We hung it right outside of our dining area on the patio.  I can hear it inside the house, and whenever I do, I think of my mom and of my friends who remembered her and us in such a special way.

The metal plate that hangs at the bottom is inscribed with the title “Treasure of Heaven”.  How more appropriate could it be to honor my mom’s memory?

Favorite #7

Not even a week after the funeral, my sisters and a nephew who live in Florida came out to help me go through most of Mom’s things.  It was a daunting task made so much easier with their help and companionship.  So that is definitely a favorite for the month!

Here my sisters Nancy and Susan are providing a bit of levity by modeling hats they found in Mom’s closet.  And they’re probably going to kill me for blogging this photo, but it’s one of my favorites I took all month, and this is a post about favorites, so how could I not?

Favorite #8

On Nancy’s last day here we needed a break from the stressful job of sorting through everything.  So…

…we went out for lunch and then did a little shopping.  Here we are at one of my VERY favorite restaurants Pappadeaux’s Seafood Kitchen for lunch.  It was yummalicious!  And it was just the break we needed before coming back and getting some more work done at home.

So that’s my May favorites.  Even through the sadness that the month held, there were people to embrace and moments of cheerfulness.  It’s been a while since I’ve blogged.  I’ve been in a bit of a funk, and it’s been hard to motivate myself to do things that I normally love to do.  But I’m pushing myself now to really try to get back to normal…or maybe a new normal.  But at least something that more approaches normal for me.

To provide more cheerfulness, it would be great if you could tell me about some of your favorite happenings, sightings, purchases, etc. that occurred for you in May.  I hope you’ll do so in the comments below!  And here comes the sun…in June!
