May 2023 Favorites!

I SHOULD be posting my June Favorites right now, but seeing as how I never got around to posting my May Favorites, those will take precedence instead!  So since there’s already been TOO MUCH ado, without FURTHER ado, let’s get to it!

FAVORITE #1

We had been dry for SO LONG and needed the rain SO BAD, that when we had a decent rain on the 10th of May, it was definitely a favorite!

FAVORITE #2

The next night we watched the ACM Awards hosted by Garth Brooks and Dolly Parton.  I am so impressed with Dolly…still going strong at 77!  Wonder how she does it. 🤔

FAVORITE #3

A few garden/flower bed favorites from May…back when everything was green and beautiful!

In early May, the peas were at their peak!  We enjoyed them raw as a snack and in salads, stir-fried, and lightly boiled as a side veggie.  So good!

On the 12th of May, I harvested all of these beautiful greens:

Red leaf lettuce

Beautiful salad bowl blend

Spinach

I took the next three pictures on the 21st.

It’s funny to look at this picture of the new teeny, tiny cucumbers just coming onto the plant, when now the cucumber production is winding way down and the leaves are turning yellow and brown and getting crunchy.  Almost time to take the plants out.  Lots of dill pickles in the pantry, though, so that’s nice!

The plum tomatoes were looking very promising!  Two batches of salsa done in the last few days, and probably two more to go.

The Greggii Salvia in the backyard flower bed was looking spiffy!

Near the end of the month, I could look out the dining room window and see that the daylilies were sending up blossom shoots.  A promise of flowers coming in June!

FAVORITE #4

I spent most of Mother’s Day in the car driving/riding to Louisiana to visit Cara and her family.  While spending all day in the car was not a favorite, seeing my granddaughters, daughter, and son-in-law DEFINITELY was!  The main reason we planned the trip was to see Helen’s spring band concert, but as the time approached, we also learned that Edie would be in a talent show at her school, and we would be there for her awards day, as well.

Edie’s talent show was Monday morning, and I thought I had taken some pictures, but I don’t have any on my phone, so I guess I didn’t.  It was really fun, though.  Edie played her violin, and did a great job.  I was impressed with how talented and brave all those 4th, 5th, and 6th graders were!

Then Monday night was Helen’s band concert.  I only got this one picture while they were setting up.

Their sound was pretty impressive, especially for a junior high band!

The next morning was Edie’s end-of-the-year awards ceremony at her school.  I took many pictures and video clips, but I’ll just post this one, which is a screenshot from a video I took.  She received quite a few awards, and we were/are very proud of her!

We headed home right after Edie’s awards ceremony, so it was a short trip, but it was full of activity, which was great!

We were so looking forward to getting some kayaking excursions in during the month, but as it turned out, we only did one.  But I’m glad we at least took the time to do that one!

We went to Cleburne State Park again, and it was so peaceful!  It was the Monday a full week before Memorial Day, so kids were still in school, and hardly anyone was around.

I clearly still need help with my selfie skills!  Look at my big old arm in the foreground.  Argh!  But it was a nice day, and we had a picnic after the kayaking before heading back home.

FAVORITE #6

On Memorial Day we put together one of our favorite grill meals…seafood skewers.  Hadn’t had this in a while, and it was delicious!

These were the assembled skewers prior to grilling.  Big Eagle grills the skewers, and I make wild rice and heat up a nice crusty loaf of French bread to go with them.  I was so excited about eating them that I forgot to take a picture of the finished product!  Ha!

FAVORITE #7

“LEO IN MAY”

Danny and Erin are so good about sending pictures of our new grandson through Google photos.  I plucked some of my favorites from the month to share here.  Can’t wait to hold this little guy!  Wish they weren’t so far away!

Watching Ted Lasso together!

Orangetheory Fitness, where I work out, does Mayhem every May.  During the last week of May, if you do 4 out of 6 workouts, this year you earned a t-shirt.  I’m proud to say, I earned my t-shirt!

I love May!  It’s one of my favorite months of the year, and it was great to look back on the highlights, especially now that we’re in the middle of summer.  Hopefully, I’ll be back in a day or two to post my June favorites, and then I’ll be caught up!

Would love to hear how things are in your neck of the woods!  Are you having a sweltering summer like we are?  Do you have fond memories of May?  Is there anything YOU’RE trying to catch up on?  Spill it in the comments!  Would love to hear from you!

Love all the pictures. It’s great to see Danny holding a baby.
It’s been hard this year with my raised garden. But I have to say with my attitude it’s getting better and better. It’s sure is hard than putting in ground. Too much planning to put in right spot and etc. and I did do a lot of things wrong. Next year I do better. But I might expect more. I raising something I never ate or raised. Kohlrabi and it’s like a cabbage taste and did well in garden. Tomatoes is taking over everything. Ugh
    Thanks for sharing. Karen

Change can be hard! But it sounds like you are learning, and I can imagine you will only get better and better at it. I’ve never tasted or grown kohlrabi. Good on you for trying something new!

  2. So glad to catch up with you. Or your May! And look forward to catching up with your June, too. I just can’t seem to stay ahead of my blog reading. I go in spurts. But I am here again for today.

What a darling baby boy. You have beautiful grandchildren, all 3. Leo is adorable. Love the coloring and those chubby cheeks. Hope you guys are making plans to go visit in the fairly near future. I miss my grandson terribly, too. They are coming the end of July. In the meantime, we Facetime several days a week. Hope he will recognize me when we are face to face.

Congratulations to both of your accomplished granddaughters. Hope they are enjoying a fun summer.

So jealous of your garden bounty. I planted a couple of very small, raised beds but put the beds too close to a rock wall. The sprinklers aren’t hitting them very well so I have had to try to water them additionally and the heat from the rock wall is radiating right onto my plants. Anyway, things started out well but with our 24th day of triple digit heat and zero rain, my plants are pretty pitiful. Lessons learned for next year. Your lettuce is so pretty and crisp and green. Love the little red tinge to the red lettuce. Well done!!

So good to hear from you, Leslie! Thank you for such kind words! It’s so discouraging when things don’t go right with your plantings. I remember a few years ago how BEAUTIFUL our corn crop was, and our mouths were watering for it, but it wasn’t quite ready. Then before it WAS ready, the squirrels discovered it and totally annihilated it! (And, yes…I had to look up how to spell that word. Ha!) Will not even attempt to plant corn again. But you should definitely try again next year with what you’ve learned under your belt.

Catching up on your posts. I’m a Dolly fan too. She has such a wholesome attitude. Love the garden greens. I’m glad you get to visit Cara & her clan often. I’ve done some kayaking too, fun to get on the water. Love the seafood, my mouth is watering! Pics of Leo are precious. Your workouts are inspirational! Cuzin Tweety
