January Favorites! (2020)

Calendar, January, Month, Organizer, Appointment

February is FINALLY here!  YAY!  I know January really does have 31 days just like six of the other months.  So why does it always SEEM so much longer?  To me it seems two weeks longer than all the other months.  Perhaps because there is so much activity in the months just before it, what with the preparations and celebrations of the holidays.  Then the celebrations abruptly end, and it’s just the long winter stretching ahead of you.  But we have made it to February, and I’m ready to look BACK at January and my favorite things from the first month of 2020.

Favorite #1

I don’t go to the movies very often, but this month I went twice.  In fact, I started off the new year by going to see Frozen II on New Year’s Day with my granddaughters Helen and Edie.  While we watched Frozen II, their parents were in another part of the complex watching another movie.  I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the second Frozen.  I’m such a soft touch, I even cried during it.

Our movie ended before Cara and Paul’s, so the girls played a few of the arcade games while we waited for them.

I think the air hockey gave them the most bang for the buck. 😃  Then since we found ourselves still waiting, and the girls were getting hungry, went across the street to Chick-fil-A and picked up something to bring back and eat.

I went to the other movie 10 days later with my book club gals after our meeting.  We saw Little Women.  I had previously rented the 2018 version of the movie and was less than thrilled with it.  But I thought this most recent version was very well done, and I thoroughly enjoyed it!  And of course, yes, I cried some during it, too.

Fun fact: There are 7 different versions of Little Women at Netflix.com!

Favorite #2

I have become a fan of broadwaydirect.com and their lotteries!  I entered for the first time back in October when I won discounted tickets to Phantom.  During the second full week in January I entered for Hello, Dolly!

Favorite #3

Hand in hand with my second favorite then, is my third favorite for January: Bass Performance Hall in Fort Worth.  I got two $25 tickets through the lottery for…

The only thing about the lottery is that you must be willing to accept whatever seats they choose for you.  We didn’t realize back in October how lucky we had been to get orchestra seating.  This time we were in the upper gallery, three rows down from the very top row of the venue.

Yep…nosebleed.  Ha!  But I’ve always read that there’s not really a bad seat in Bass Performance Hall, and I must say we were able to completely enjoy the show.  The only drawback to those seats is that there is NO leg room.  You pretty much have to sit with your legs at a 90 degree angle the whole time.  Thank goodness for intermission!

Then we were back at Bass Performance Hall the very next weekend to see…

SO GOOD!  Paul and Cara gave us this experience as a Christmas gift!  And since they paid regular price, our seats were so much better!

See?  And we had plenty of leg room.  Ahhhhhh, nice!  I grew up loving the Beatles, so I loved everything about this performance.

I’m sure we’ll be seeing you again in the not-so-distant future, Bass Performance Hall!

Favorite #4

I don’t put many pictures up here of my baby, but one night while Big Eagle and I were watching TV, I just thought she looked so cute.

Sleeping all curled up in a ball.  She’s a perpetual favorite!

Favorite #5

Don’t know what has kept us from trying this local restaurant for so long, but we finally did try it the night we went to Hello, Dolly!  I guess we weren’t really expecting much, so we were surprised to discover that we liked enough that we wanted to go back again the next weekend.  And that’s what we did!

Here’s Big Eagle at our table that night at The Rim.  Both nights the service was great, the food was good, and the price was very reasonable.  The first visit he had the Pomme Frites Dinner, and he said the steak in it was really good.  There was plenty of food…more potatoes than he was able to finish.  I had the Cheesy Chicken Poblano Dinner.  Delicious!  The next weekend, he had the meatloaf with mashed potatoes and spicy creamed corn.  Again he was very pleased.  I had the etoufee, which was really good.  A little spicier than I might have wanted, but still very good.  I’m sure we’ll be back again!

Favorite #6

This picture was taken last Sunday January 26th.  These are the very first daffodils to bloom in the flower bed this season.  It just puts an immense hope in my heart every year when the first blooms burst forth.  A perennial favorite for sure! 🙌

Favorite #7

No picture to accompany this one, but I FaceTimed with Cara and the girls this past Monday because my older granddaughter Helen had some news she wanted to share with me.  She had run for student council this semester and was elected!  YAY, Helen!  The smile on her face and the excitement in her voice just made me SO happy!  And doubly so since she was so disappointed last fall when she ran and didn’t get elected.  I’m so very proud of her for not giving up on her goal, and trying again.  I love that girl SO MUCH! 😍

Favorite #8

The last of my January favorites.  I like to have just a small bite of sweet after my lunch, and when my sister Susan was here last spring, we ran out of whatever little chocolates we were using for our tiny lunch dessert.  When we went to the grocery store, she thought to head to the candy aisle, and she brought these to the cart:

They were the perfect size for what we wanted and so yummy!  So when I finally ran out of the Christmas chocolate this week, I picked up a pack of these at my HEB.

There are sixteen in a package, so these will last me over two weeks.  Perfect!

So GOOD-BYE, January!  I’m ready for YOU, February and looking for my favorite season to follow not too long after you are gone.  How about you?  Do you feel the same about January or can you change my tune about the first month of the year?  And I’d love to hear about the highlights of your January!  Please share that or anything else on your mind right now.
