This month I’m participating again in 10 on the 10th! For June the prompt is my 10 favorite things about summer. You can’t read my list without realizing that I love food! Half of my favorite things are edible. 😋
HOME-GROWN TOMATOES!
This photo is from last summer. Our tomatoes haven’t ripened yet. But the plants are LOADED, so when they ARE ready, we are going to have a SLEW! Bring it on!
PEACHES!
They do grow some good peaches here in Texas. But the best peaches I’ve ever had were ones we bought from a stand years ago when we were traveling through Georgia on vacation. So many things you can now buy year round, but peaches are one of those produce items that still need to be purchased in season.
LONGER DAYS!
I relish these days when darkness doesn’t really descend until around 9 p.m. It just feels luxurious to me!
BEING WITH FAMILY!
Since Cara and her family have lived in Nigeria, we’ve looked forward to having them visit every summer. This year has been different since they’ve been here since the end of March thanks to COVID-19. As much as I hate COVID, I have really enjoyed having them here for an extended stay. Under normal circumstances, they’re here in the summer for just a few weeks during which we try to fit in as much as we can. It’s been really nice to have them around and just hanging out more together casually like we were in these pictures.
SHOWING SOME SKIN!
Meaning that in the summer we get to wear lighter clothing and less of it. Shorts, tank tops, casual dresses and skirts, flip flops and sandals. No need for layers…yay!
WATER FUN!
We live less than 5 minutes away from a small water park here called Pirate’s Cove. We don’t have a pool, so we buy season tickets to this park every year. The girls love it! And Big Eagle and I go by ourselves sometimes when we really need to cool off and float in the lazy river.
We haven’t been yet this year. Currently it’s open at 25% occupancy, but we haven’t ventured there yet. Sure would love to, though. Most of any water fun we’ve been having around here this year has been coming from the hose!
WATERMELON!
I remember as a kid going to a summer day camp and marveling at how the camp counselor was able to eat a half round slice of watermelon without it dripping all down her arm. That takes talent! Ha!
FRESH CORN ON THE COB!
Preferably slathered with butter and given a good sprinkle of salt and pepper. YUM!
POPSICLES, ICE CREAM, & FROZEN LEMONADE!
This picture of Danny with a popsicle in the dog days of August 1978 has always given me a chuckle. Who doesn’t love an ice cold sweet treat on a sweltering day? One of my favorites is the Minute Maid frozen lemonade you can buy in the freezer section at the grocery store. Just be careful not to get a brain freeze! 😆
SHADE!
What a blessing it is to have shade in the summer! When I’ve been working under the beating sun in the garden, it’s a relief to seek a few moments of refuge in the shade. When I take ice water out to Big Eagle after he’s been out mowing for a while, he always finds a shady spot to cut off the motor and chit chat while he gets refreshed. When I’m riding my bike during these hot days, I have my favorite stretches of road where the trees on either side make an archway, and the coolness provided therein is so welcome for the few moments I’m there. Thank God for shade!
I want to thank Leslie at onceuponatimehappilyeverafter for hosting this link-up. It’ll be interesting to see the lists others came up with. How would your top 10 summer favorites compare to mine? Let me know in the comments!
